I passed a friend's house on a hot July afternoon and saw this wonderful light filtering through the trees. I couldn't wait to paint it. This is a very inviting scene.
A restful scene in 100 degree weather. There is a robin on the edge of the fountain and I keep thinking that a small back Scottie terrier is peaking out from the curtain in the window at the lower left window.
No one was sitting out on this porch on this hot July day, but I can imagine that it is well used when the weather turns cooler. Crepe Myrtle are in full bloom in Ft Smith all summer long -- great colors.
In the Belle Pointe Historic area of Ft Smith a lovely garden has been developed over the years. I have painted several views of this garden and hope to do more as the seasons change. This was from a photo taken in July of this year.
I was walking in the Hillcrest area of Ft Smith when the sunlight through the wrought iron filligree gate attracted my attention. This is a back entrance to the property.
All around Ft. Smith you see the lofty spires of several Churches rising above the Trees. IC is near the downtown area and nestled in the neighborhood. I walked to church and school until 8th grade in my hometown of Ferguson, MO. This view reminds me of all those years.
This house is now the Drennen-Scott Historic Site in Van Buren AR., renovated now and open to the public in May of 2011. I painted there with my class around 2000 before it was sold to the University of Ar Fort Smith. The house was built in 1838 by John Drennen, a former federal agent to the Five Civilized Tribes and founder of Van Buren AR. Only family members owned or lived at this property until the 2005 sale to UAFS.
In May I painting at a three day plein air event in Cotter AR. My friends and I got up early on the second day to paint the dawn. Across the White river from Linda's home, where we were staying was the Sportsman Fishing Lodge. Six AM and the fishermen were stirring just as the sun peaked over the trees. Painting fast was our job that morning. Linda brought us coffee while we painted and then made breakfast for us when the sun was higher in the sky. Thank you Linda.
When in Taos attending a workshop with Kevin Macpherson, the class was invited to paint in the garden of Taos artist Walt Gonske. His garden and home/studio were a wonderful treat. I painted this in July, 2011 when I returned home, from photos taken on site.
With camera in hand, I walked around the neighborhood near our vacation rental house and then painted this at home in July 2011. The wild fires were not near us, though the air was dry and hot and the sky was orange in the evening. The cool morning air was a delight.
June 2011 I attended a workshop with Kevin Macpherson in the Taos NM area with two friends. The class was a five day adventure in plein air painting, that is painting outdoors. On the third day we were painting in Taos and set up on the parking lot and I did a quick study of this scene. At my home studio I did this larger version from that study and some photos I took of the area.
This large painting of the Holy Ghost River was done in my studio from a small plein air painting that I did on site in the Santa Fe National Forest. I used a painting knife and layered on the paint to simulate the rough texture of the bark on the fallen trees. Because it is a Nationl Forest the trees that fall are left in place to keep the area in a natural state. There are cabins on the road that runs along the rivers edge that have been there since the 1930's. The cabins must be maintained in good condition but can not be added too.
This painting was done in May of 2009 at the Peel Mansion Gardens in Bentonville AR. The mansion was originally by apple orchards and now is across form the main office of Wal-Mart Corp. on a very busy commercial road. I enjoyed the contrast between the Conoco sign and the formal garden path and plants.
Three days of plein air painting at Garvin Woodland Gardens in Hot Springs AR in 2006 is still feeding me images as I review my drawings, photos and small on site paintings.
I live in an area filled with waterfalls, lakes, streams and I love to paint on location when ever I can. Painting en plein air engages all my senses, not just the visual. This studio painting was done from photographs and small studies.
Taking a walk after a storm passes and the sun starts to shine, you just want to stomp through the puddles like a kid. That is the feeling that wanted to get with this painting -- just invite you to splash away.
In Virginia many tidal creeks cut into the land along the Potamac River. This scene was near our home when we lived in Virgina before moving to Ft. Smith AR.
We lived in Virginia for a few years and loved to stroll the pathways along the tidal creeks in the early morning and late in the day. This painting was done from a watercolor sketch I did after our evening walk. When I found it recently in pile of papers when cleaning my studio, I decided to try it in oil. 12 x 24 oil
This is a small painting done en plein air at Garvin Woodlands Garden in Hot Springs AR. In April the trails are full of daffidills and tulips, flowering azaleas and dogwood trees.
In this painting I was exploring the design elements in nature, I must have mountains on my mind. Memories of a trip to Colorado, crossing the continental divide and then back again inspired this painting.
This is an oil painting done with a palette knife. The scene is from memory and imagination and maybe a little wishful thinking. I would love to have a retreat on a river, lake or stream just like this. 16 x 20 oil sold
Light and water always attract me. This oil painting was inspired by a watercolor I did many years ago. I liked the image so much that I just had to try it in oil. 24 x 18 sold
The Pecos River decends through the Sante Fe National Forest with many access sites for fishermen and women to wade into its cool waters for flyfishing. This is a painting in oil with a palette knife done from photos taken during our plein air trip in June 2010. 16 x 20
In the late afternoon you can see the gathering rain clouds in the south and west from Sante Fe. The sun tints the clouds lovely pinks and golden oranges. The view changes so quickly that you can only make a few pencil sketches and a photo as references for a painting later. This 12 x 16 was done in oil the next morning from memory.
This is the first painting done on a plein air trip with two friends to the Santa Fe National Forest. The wind this morning was about 20 miles per hour- so real sand and pine needles can be detected in the oil paint. This is June of 2010 and yes it is snow on the top of Baldy 12 x 16
In July of 2010 a friend invited me to stay with her at her family cabin in the Santa Fe Mountains in N.M. There were three of us painting plein air for 5 days in the mountains and in the Sante Fe area. The cabin was built of native stone and logs. Early on the second day we stayed home and painted the cabin as the sun came peeking through the pine forest. This is an oil painting done on site -- 16 x 12
Lee Creek meanders through the Ozark National Forest. I have easy access to many sights along its banks from Devil's Den State Park to Van Buren AR where it empties into the Arkansas River. This small 12 x 9 painting was done from a photo taken on a plein air painting day in 2008. The painting was done in 2010.
I have been painting in many mediums and with traditional subjects for 40 years. I now include abstracts in my inventory. Enjoy these selections from 2006 through 2011.
I lived in Fairfield CT for 25 years, painting and teaching painting. I was an elected member of the Silvermine Guild of Artist and taught at the Greenwich Art Society. I had several gallery shows in the late '80s and '90s.
My husband and I moved here, to his family home, when he retired in 1996. I am currently a signature member of ANA, Artist of Northwest Arkansas, and teach painting and give workshops in the area.
